Swimming tests present at the Olympic Games

 The Olympic Games are one of the most important sporting events in the world; it brings together the most relevant disciplines, among which are the swimming tests. There, swimmers of various modalities are present to represent themselves and their nations.

Even many athletes consider that the Olympic Games are more important than the world championships of their sport. For this reason, getting a medal in the Games is one of the greatest feats that any human being can achieve.

Returning to swimming, it is known that it has been present in the Olympic world since Athens 1896, at which time the modern Olympic Games inspired by the ancient ones were inaugurated. Therefore, this sports discipline is considered one of the most traditional.

What swimming tests are present at the Games?

In the late 1800s, swimming was carried out on open water surfaces such as the sea with lifeguarding training. Over time, this sport began to be practiced in swimming pools, specifically in 1908. It was not until 1924 that lanes were used to separate each swimmer and provide greater order to the competitions.



Over the years, technology and other aspects made swimming evolve to what it is today. Currently, a series of swimming tests are carried out based on the physical abilities of each athlete.

50 meters: freestyle.

100 meters: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly.

200m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, medleys

400 meters: freestyle, combined (styles).

800 meters: freestyle (women).

1500 meters: freestyle (men).

4 x 100 meters: freestyle, medleys ( styles ).

4 x 200 meters: freestyle.

50-meter freestyle

Within the swimming tests, the 50 meters in freestyle are the main ones to be carried out. In this, a tour of the pool must be carried out using a freestyle; In most cases, if not always, the chosen one is the front crawl.

100 and 200 meters: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly

In these tests, a route of two pools is made in 100 meters and four pools in 200 meters, round trip in both. Each one is carried out in a different modality, using all the modalities separately; this means that a freestyle test is done, another backstroke, and so on.

Regarding the 400 meters, this test is done only in freestyle or combined. There, each of the styles is mixed to make the tour.

800 and 1500 meters: freestyle

The swimming events at the Olympic Games also have their content in the background. That is to say, these competitions are of greater resistance and are categorized as long-distance tests.

In the women's branch, an 800-meter freestyle tour is carried out. For its part, in the men's branch, they do 1500 meters, also in freestyle.

4 x 100 and 4 x 200 meters: freestyle and medley

Team relays made up of four swimmers are also part of the Olympic jousts. In this modality, two competitions are held, one of 100 meters and the other of 200, both in freestyle. On the other hand, relay swimming events are also carried out by combining the four styles of swimming.

Swimming tests: synchronized swimming

For its part, synchronized swimming entered the 1984 Olympic Games, held in Los Angeles. These also have their respective tests and are part of the sports discipline of swimming.
